McCullin was respected by many in his field, but crazy to military personel who faught beside him in the trenches. One General observed Don standing up while all the other photographers were on the ground cover their heads. Don was reading his meter to get the right exposure in the middle of a heavy fire fight. He stood calm as he was determeined to get the right exposure. Wars changed him in other ways.
He covered so many wars that he became used to extreme conditons. When he went home he found himself sleeping under tables on the floor as he did many times while on assignment. It sounds crazy but he was just so used to it-- sleeping in a bed felt weird.
in an interview, a reporter commented "your photos are so dark" McCullin replied "becuase I take pictures of dark things".

Numbers 30:2 When a man makes a vow to the LORD or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.
"I will not promise you anything but if I do I will keep my word no matter how long it takes."
